What is Crab Island?

The name ‘Crab Island’ is misleading. It makes you think it’s an actual island. Technically, it was an island created by the Army Corps of Engineers they dredged the Destin Pass and created the Jetties to stabilize the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. The sand from the project was put into the Choctawhatchee Bay and create the small island that eventually came to be known as Crab Island.

Drifting sands from the Gulf of Mexico and the occasional hurricane eventually eroded the island to what is is today. Now it is an underwater sandbar one the most popular places to anchor a boat for all kinds of water activities. The water is very shallow and at high tide is blue-green and crystal clear. The sandbar ranges from 1-4 feet deep in most places.

Navarre Beach vacation home rentals are growing in popularity and even booking 3 months ahead the inventory was quite picked over. There were single-family homes, condos, townhouses, and much more to choose from.

Emerald Coast By Owner Listings

We have used VRBO for 15 years off and on and used it to book our Navarre Beach rental. In our research, they had the largest inventory of Navarre Beach condo rentals and homes. Ultimately, local rental companies like Beach Rentals at Navarre, Navarre Properties, and Southern Vacation Rentals may manage the rental. They may have their own listing sites but are likely listing the property on VRBO as well. One national company, Wyndham Vacation Rentals, has a large presence as well. Emerald Coast By Owner is a regional player and does not have booking fees and is definitely worth a look as well. Of course, check Airbnb as well.

#1 Insider Tip: Most local rental companies list their available vacation rentals on one of the larger sites. If you can find out who manages that rental you may be able to go direct and save some of the booking fees. It may not be worth the time for shorter rentals, but we went for 2 weeks and would likely try to do that next time now that we know the area. Important Criteria in Navarre Beach Rentals (Location, Cost and Amenities, Condo or House)

Vacation Rental Location

Our Navarre Beach Rentals Guide walks you through the most important decision points when choosing Navarre Beach vacation rentals. We also list the major Gulf side properties on this page ordered by location going east to west as you turn off the Navarre Beach Causeway on to Gulf Boulevard.

We list the properties east to west because you will want to be close to the world-famous Juana’s Pagodas, a Navarre Beach institution, where my brother essentially lives to play sand volleyball, located on the sound side right as you come over the bridge.

The further west from the bridge you travel the less congested it will be. We were about a half-mile down from the bridge turn off, which ended up being perfect. You will trade congestion for walkability as you head west. There are not many bars and restaurants right on Navarre Beach so that may not matter to you anyway.

Emerald Coast By Owner Listings

We are not going to spend time on properties featuring, “pristine sugar sand beaches steps from your door and the stunning views of the emerald water”. Fortunately, almost every property boasts these features. This is why you choose Navarre Beach. It is beautiful and amazing that it hasn’t become as commercialized as neighboring Pensacola Beach or Fort Walton Beach.

Your next big decision is the Gulf of Mexico side or sound side. We are going to concentrate on all the major properties on the Gulf side because that is where we would rent the next time we need a Navarre Beach rental. We had to wait out some rough surf from tropical storm Barry on our trip and the sound came in handy for swimming. But I love an ocean view and it trumps all in my opinion. We will cover sound side options and single-family homes at the end of this guide.

Cost and Amenities of Vacation Homes

Let’s talk about cost. We did our best to divide the properties into three levels signified by dollar signs ($,$$,$$$) in the caption of the property picture. You won’t find a lot of difference in cost based on the location of the property on the beach going east to west. They all have access to the beautiful Navarre beaches and views. It depends on the size of the units, amenities for the properties, and whether it was originally built for luxury, economy, or somewhere in between. Then, of course, within a property, since most are privately owned, one unit can be more luxurious, updated, or on a better floor. The normal metrics of how many people the unit sleeps and how many bathrooms will affect the price as well.

In general, most of the luxury high rise condo complex located gulf front have pools and sundecks Some may even have two pools and a hot tub. Only the higher-priced options have legitimate workout rooms, however, The Shark Gym, featuring a reasonable $5 dollar day pass, is back over the bridge and will be a 10-minute drive for most beach renters. I used it once and it had everything I needed but having one within your condo complex would be much nicer.

Navarre Beach Homes or Condos?

Next question: Navarre Beach house rentals or condos? Most of the selection on the Gulf side of Gulf Boulevard is condominium complexes for the first two miles. Further down Gulf Boulevard some townhomes and houses are available. If you want to be closer to the bridge and want the privacy of a house, searching VRBO may be your first step to find something on the sound (north) side of Gulf Boulevard.

In our case, we were considering bringing a dog and thought having a yard may be a good thing for the kids. We ended up in a single-family house in the development of Village at Navarre, which is on the sound side. We ended up not having a dog and it was really too hot to use the yard.

Our community had a path to the sound and a dedicated boat slip. The privacy was nice but I think we will go for something on the Gulf with a view on our next trip. We accessed the beach from a walkway next to the Caribbean Resort. If you plan to house multiple families or host a reunion there are some houses in that development that would work well and are probably much less expensive than getting multiple units on the Gulf side.

Summerwind Resort, 8577 Gulf Blvd, Navarre, FL 32566, has one, two and three-bedroom condos in three luxury beachfront buildings. Located on the far eastern end of Navarre Beach, this resort offers gulf front balconies in all units and the three-bedroom condos have wrap-around balconies. It has great views of Navarre Beach State Park, the beach fishing pier and of course the beach itself. It is closest complex to the Navarre Beach beach pier.

This resort includes a gulf-front pool that is heated seasonally, hot tub, gym, community room, lush landscaping, and a picnic area with barbecue pits. Upscale furnishings and appliances add a touch of luxury to these relaxing rentals.

Navarre Beach Regency

All Navarre Beach Regency, 8525 Gulf Blvd, Navarre, FL 32566, units front the Gulf of Mexico with large balconies that open from the living room and master bedroom. Navarre Beach Regency’s large Gulf front pool is heated seasonally (from the first week of March to end of October) and there is a fitness center.

Navarre Beach Regency offers 2 and 3 bedroom units. (3 bedroom units end in 06 & 07.) All units have full kitchens and a washer/dryer inside the unit. The beach is accessible by way of the handicap-friendly elevated dune crossover walkway.

Originally built in 1996, Navarre Beach Regency has over 400-feet of beach along the Gulf front with an elevated dune crossover. It has nine floors and 106 units, and is considered one of the least crowded condominium towers on Navarre Beach. The resort is directly on the beach, with lounge chairs and umbrellas available for rent seasonally.

These oceanfront vacation rental condos have nine-foot ceilings with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors in the master suite and great room. A security guard shack ensures safety. There is an exercise room with many different kinds of equipment and a television to watch while getting your workout in.

Beach Colony Resort Navarre Beach – Navarre Beach Vacation Rentals

Beach Colony Resort, 8501 Gulf Blvd, Navarre, FL 32566, is Navarre Beach`s newest property and is a luxury, high-rise condominium complex that sits directly in front of the Gulf of Mexico and is surrounded by lush tropical landscaping. With two and three bedrooms Gulf-front condos filling both east and west towers, there are plenty of choices at Beach Colony Resort to suit your needs.

The 19-story East tower built in 2002 and consists of two and three bedroom luxury condos.The West Tower began construction in 2009 but faltered when the real estate bubble came along, remaining unfinished until 2013. Since then over 68 units have been completed.

Navarre Beach Vacation rentals here offer access to a wide array of onsite amenities. It has the largest resort swimming pool on Navarre Beach, hot tub, private beach access, a professional tennis court, and a fitness center. This complex also offers covered parking and umbrellas and chairs for rent on the beach (bring your own if you can because the rentals are not cheap!), and it is within walking distance of all the beach activities, restaurants, and bars.

Don’t forget to bring:

While some owners and rental companies provide you an initial supply of toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, and trash bags to get you through your first 24 hours, you may need to bring the following: paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, hairdryer, napkins, condiments, spices, dishwashing liquid, laundry soap, coffee and coffee filters, beach towels, umbrella, beach toys, sunscreen, and anything else you may need for your perfect vacation rental.

What a wonderful place for our annual family beach trip. The unit was tastefully furnished with quality bedding, linens and decor. We did a lot of cooking in and the kitchen was well stocked with all of the cookware, utensils and appliances to make meal prep a breeze. The balcony views were spectacular and we took advantage of the large balcony to enjoy our coffee in the mornings, and both lunches and dinners on the balcony. The entire resort property was spotless and extremely well maintained. Having a secure storage on the ground floor for beach gear was really nice. Dottie was an outstanding host. She was easily accessible and checked in with us several times to ensure we were enjoying our stay. We were also blessed with beautiful weather all week and an absolutely pristine beach with clear emerald waters.

We are hoping to make a return in the fall for a long weekend.

I would highly recommend Beach Colony West 11D to anyone looking for an incredible beach experience.

The Pearl of Navarre Beach

Half a mile west of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier is the Pearl of Navarre Beach, 8499 Gulf Blvd, Navarre, FL 32566. Directly Gulf Front, the Pearl was built in 1999, and offers 17 floors of luxury condos, with amenities that are second to none. We will vote this one the best complex name. “Pearl” just sounds cool, doesn’t it?

The Pearl of Navarre is gated and secure. It has a fitness facility, two large pools, one heated in the cooler months. There is a community hot tub, and a sun deck, plenty of parking, and beach chair/umbrella rentals available in season. They have outdoor grills in the community gazebo.

The condominiums here are available in two different floor plans, one with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, the other has three bedrooms with three bathrooms. There is also an onsite rental service provided by Wyndham Vacation Rentals. Units have floor to ceiling glass in the living room area and private balconies from the master bedroom.

Sugar Beach Navarre Townhomes

Sugar Beach has 3 bedrooms 3 bath units directly on the gulf (unit A4 has 4 bedrooms) and 2 bedrooms, 2 bath units that face the pool and parking area. Each offer full kitchens and washer/dryers inside each unit. The gulf front units have a deck off the living area and the master bedroom.

Caribbean Resort Navarre Beach

Caribbean Resort condominium, 8477 Gulf Blvd, Gulf Breeze, FL 32566, is 19 stories and was built in 1999. This is the complex we walked by every day on the way to the beach and started me thinking about renting Gulf side next time. They have a pool, heated seasonally and two hot tub spas. This resort also includes cabanas with both wind-sheltered sunning and shaded areas. Steps from the pool and spas, a picnic area with grills and storage for your beach toys.

These are three-bedroom Gulf-front homes looking out over beautiful Navarre Beach and the water below. They have ceiling to floor windows and sliding glass doors give these condos the feeling of being right on the beach.

There are only three units per floor here so waiting for an elevator is not a problem and an added sense of privacy. This complex has the feel of a low-density building with the amenities of a much larger resort. Many units have upgrades such as granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

Navarre Beach Sound Side And Houses

Sound Side

We stayed on the sound side in a single-family home. We were not right on the sound but there was a little walkway accessed from our complex, a lovely community called the Village at Navarre, making it a two-minute walk. Our home was spacious, with an outdoor shower and community pool. Another great option for Navarre Beach rentals.

Sunset Harbor is another sound side community that has vacation homes and condos.

Tip: You also need to be aware that Navarre is separate from Navarre Beach. Make sure your house is in Navarre Beach, not Navarre if you want to be on the island. Houses “right on the sound” are NOT ocean-front. Make sure your house, if sound side, is in Navarre Beach, not Navarre, to enjoy the ocean and sound access.

Navarre Beach Houses

If you want a house on the beach that is also close to the Navarre Beach Causeway you really have no choice but go to the sound side of the island. Once you get past the Sandunes complex you get more single-family homes on the Gulf side of the island. This opens up the options for vacation rentals.

Again, we made our reservation in April for a July stay. This may seem early but if you want to have your pick of the best inventory of houses and condos you need to start looking and booking six months or more in advance.

Some additional options, if you are staying a night or two (many rentals require a minimum of 3 or 4 days stay), are Air B & B or Trip Advisor, which also has reviews and other area activity information. It is possible to go directly to the home or condo owner but that may be a time-consuming endeavor overusing one of the larger listing aggregators.

Hotels

The Springhill Suites Navarre Beach is the only traditional hotel actually on Navarre Beach if you are looking for a short term Navarre Beach Rentals (1- 2 days). We had a drink in the bar one evening and walked past it frequently when we were on the beach. It looks like a pretty good set up. The construction appears to be new and they have a nice lazy river style pool. A few too many kids for us (of course we have two so who are we to judge) in the restaurant and bar. But, if we were just going for a night or two in may be a really nice option.

The Summerwind has a building that operates more like a hotel, but the best we could ever find was a 2 night minimum on Booking.com. No one night only rentals.

Is the water clear at Navarre Beach?

The water at Navarre Beach is crystal clear and it’s a great place for swimming and snorkeling. The sand is a great place to play and build sandcastles and is a great spot for family picnics.

Can you drink alcohol on Navarre Beach?

You can drink alcohol on public lands, public beaches, County Parks (excluding pavilions) and Bars and Restaurants. Places like the Gulf Islands National Seashore, for example, do not allow alcohol of any kind on the beach. No glass is allowed on the beach.

Is Navarre Beach open?

Yes. All of the beaches are open and follow normal hours. Between sunrise and sundown, parking is available at all public lots and spaces. Visitors may also walk and bike the multi-use path of the island of Navarre Beach. The most up to date information can be found here.

Can I rent a pet-friendly rental in Navarre?

Yes, most of the major vacation rental companies have a filter you can set for vacation rentals that allow pets. There may be restrictions on the type or size of pet, but you should be able to find a vacation rental that meets your needs.

The Boulevard Navarre Beach

The Boulevard Navarre Beach is a 34-acre entertainment district planned for the heart of Navarre to create a live, work, and play community. The land was purchased in January 2018 for roughly $5.5 million.

The 275,000-square-foot site is owned by Navarre Beach Crossings LLC, a company registered to Craig Kruse and Chandler Huff. Also involved in the project is developer Merg Hoffman who has prior experience creating similar projects for areas throughout the Southeast. He also had a hand in the construction of the Publix shopping complex neighboring the property.

Initially made public in February 2018, conceptual site plans for The Boulevard Navarre Beach included a movie theater, retail shops, and restaurants all situated in a walkable plaza including a pond with a walking trail.

The presence of a movie theater would be a first in Navarre. Currently, the closest theaters to Navarre are the United Artists Santa Rosa in Mary Esther and the Breeze Cinema 8 in Gulf Breeze.

Multifamily housing may be added to the massive commercial development planned for the corner of U.S. Highway 98 and Highway 87.

The Boulevard Site Plan — The Boulevard Proposed Site Plan as of June 2020

Conceptual collages for the site show an apartment complex with high-end amenities, retailers such as Home Goods and Ross, a dog park and outdoor entertainment space, waterfront restaurants, and walkability throughout.

The property owners have applied for a conditional use through the county to allow up to 333 multifamily dwelling units on the 33-acre property. Director of Planning and Zoning Shawn Ward said based on the submittal, the commercial plans for The Boulevard are still in place but adding this new function to the property.

The conceptual site plan for the property has also changed, shifting much of the design east and dropping some of the retail and restaurant spaces off the plan.

Merganser Enterprises submitted the site plans to the county. The plans show parking for 1,040 cars, as well as four junior anchor stores, seven outparcels bordering US 98, and two restaurants near a retention pond on the east side of the site.

Most recently, COVID-19 government closures put the brakes on the project for nearly three months. But the owners have always been optimistic about the project’s future, though there are still no official dates for completion.

With the latest county approval, dirt could be moving soon at The Boulevard site.

There’s finally visible movement at the site of a proposed large-scale commercial and entertainment district. Signs advertising a hearing on the potential project have been posted along the highways, the first visible sign of life for the project.
