Navarre Beach Marine Science Station

We hit the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station on a rainy day on our trip to Navarre Beach. It was the perfect diversion for the kids and ended up being one of our favorite things of the trip. The staff was fantastic and, although the exhibits were not fancy, you got to touch some of the water creatures and it was very interactive. It was a great way to spend an hour. And, of course, then you can walk right over to the turtle conservatory.

Navarre Beach Activity Schedule

The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station, which is located in the Navarre Beach Marine Park, aims to provide meaningful outdoor experiences for all students. It is a center for hands-on marine environmental education where students don’t only learn, they also teach.

The mission of the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is to promote the appreciation, conservation, and understanding of the marine ecosystem of coastal Florida through education and service. High school students teach younger students about the Gulf of Mexico in action-packed, standards-driven two-hour festivals.

NAVARRE BEACH MARINE SCIENCE STATION SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Summer Camps

Summer day camp sessions emphasize marine science and coastal ecology while nurturing the curiosity and stewardship potential in each child. They offer informal, field-oriented, memorable camp experiences that balance detailed study with exploration. Using elements of environmental and experiential education as well as creative arts, each session is tailored to meet the learning stages and styles of kids’ grades 3-5 and 6-8.

IMPORTANT: Each child is required to bring sunblock, a snack (no peanut products), drink and water bottle, shoes that can be worn in the water, beach towel, and a change of clothes. Swimming skills required.

Marine Conservation Camp

For Grades 3 to 5

In this unique camp, you will get to work alongside experienced mentors on exciting and relevant conservation topics such as beach restoration, invasive species, and plastic pollution. Campers will learn about the conservation issues facing our ocean today, while also developing their own solutions to local conservation issues.

PADDLEPALOOZA

For Grades 5 to 8

For three days, campers will make a splash while learning to surf. Campers will enjoy an adventurous week exploring local waters as they surf their way into the Gulf of Mexico and kayak their way through Santa Rosa Sound. The camp includes surfing and stand up paddleboard lessons.

ARTS AND THE SEA: REDUCE, RECYCLE, AND REPURPOSE!

For Grades 1 to 3

Using a variety of materials and techniques, this camp is dedicated to creating art inspired by marine debris, animals, habitats, and mysteries of the big blue.

GUY HARVEY / FYCC FISHING CAMP

For Grades 5 to 8

The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is the only facility in Northwest Florida selected to partner with the Guy Harvey Foundation and Florida Youth Conservation Commission. Learn about fish biology and conservation as well as fishing tackle, methods, and techniques. Campers will receive a custom-designed Guy Harvey shirt made just for the camp, Guy Harvey accessories, small tackle box, and a fishing pole.

DRONES & ROVS: TECHNOLOGY AND THE SEA

For Grades 6 to 8

The camp will introduce students to mechanical design, construction, and problem-solving and teamwork skills to build an ROV and explore AUVs and drones to explore above and below the sea. This camp is excellent for students who enjoy robotics.

SEA TURTLE SCIENCE

For Grades 1 to 3

Discover life as a sea turtle during this mini-camp. Discover what a sea turtle’s favorite food is and become a turtle vet to solve the mystery of an injured turtle. Learn how lighting, marine debris, and beach furniture affect sea turtle nesting habits. Students can also participate in sea turtle relays and explore the Sound. Also, the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center is right across the parking lot and is definitely worth a visit.

SHARK SCIENCE

For Grades 1 to 3

This program features local, non-local, and extinct sharks dissection and field explorations. Learn about their feeding habits, where they live, how powerful they are, and why you don’t need to be afraid of them.

Bachelor or Bachelorette party goes the wrong way? Spring Break and someone is unaccounted for the next morning? Yes, it happens. And, if so, you may have good reason to check the Santa Rosa County jail view. Actually, it also allows you to search released and all current inmates in case you want to do some background checking on your daughter’s planned date or someone you met at the bar and want to see again. The inmates can be filtered according to their names, global subject number, booking number, booking from date, booking to date, and in custody status.

We were amazed at how much search traffic Santa Rosa County jail view gets. We just tripped over it looking for something else. We wanted to find a productive reason to create a post to highlight the reason so many people are searching for that term.

One thing we were surprised to see on our trip to Navarre Beach were mugshots being used in advertisements. We are not going to remember the publications. But I think there was an advertisement for a restaurant, TC’s Front Porch, if I recall correctly, that posted the mugshots of Santa Rosa County’s most wanted as part of their advertisement.

They may have sourced the photos from Santa Rosa County Crime Stoppers. Their website states:

“If you have any information about these crimes or any person(s) involved, you are urged to call Crime Stoppers or submit a Web Tip. You do not have to give your name CRIME STOPPERS will pay a cash reward of up to $3000 and you can remain anonymous.”

I don’t think your missing bachelor or bachelorette will be found there, but it may be worth a view to know who to stay away from on your vacation.

The Navarre Beach Press also has a report on Santa Rosa County jail activity.

The Northwest Florida Daily News previously had a page dedicated to local county mugshots. It now just shows an editorial comment from their owner Gannett:

“We have made an editorial decision to discontinue the publication of mugshot galleries, or mugshot photos that are not associated with a story or other editorial content, effective immediately. Mugshot galleries presented without context may feed into negative stereotypes and, in our editorial judgment, are of limited news value. Instead, we will focus on the best ways to inform our readers by providing relevant information that will keep our communities safe and continuing to cover crime, as well as the public safety system. This policy change does not impact the use of mugshots associated with articles or other editorial content.”

This is a vacation blog, not a political one but that sounds like a good decision if they were just posted for entertainment rather than news.

In all seriousness, if you do have a true concern about someone you are vacationing with not showing up the next day and are concerned this site has contact information for Santa Rosa County authorities and also serves as a jail inmate lookup for the entire state of Florida. You can also go directly to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office site.

Juana’s Pagodas

Juana’s Pagodas seemed to be the heartbeat of Navarre Beach based on our 2-week trip. We were there at least half of the days either playing volleyball, watching my brother play in leagues, swimming in the Sound, or just getting a drink or listening to music. We also discovered gluten-free cauliflower pizza. More on that later…

Founded in 1989, Juana’s Pagodas and Sailors’ Grill is Navarre’s oldest family-owned and operated restaurant and bar. It is a series of restaurants, shops, and bars that is one of Navarre’s top beachfront hangouts. Serving up food, drinks, and electric nightlife, Juana’s Pagodas also gives access to the beach behind the restaurant that is family-friendly and open to the public.

This Florida beach bar hosts a lot of events, volleyball tournaments being one of them. Juana’s even has regattas. In season you can rent wave runners. You can also dock your boat here. If you are spending the day at Juana’s, you can rent jet skis, Hobie Cats, bicycles, beach chairs, and umbrellas. Equipment rentals give visitors a chance to ride the waves via kayaks, paddleboards, and more.

Our daughter has to eat gluten free and we are always in search of things that are “regular” kid food that are gluten free. We have tried all kinds of gluten free pizza but somehow did not know about cauliflower pizza. Juana’s had it on there menu and it was fantastic! For more traditional vacaton rentals, your best bets are searching VRBO. #1 Insider Tip: Most local rental companies list their inventories on one of the larger sites. If you can find out who manages that rental you may be able to go direct and save some of the booking fees. It may not be worth the time for shorter rentals, but we went for 2 weeks and would likely try to do that next time now that we know the area.

Springhill Suites Navarre Beach Restaurant

Beach House Bar & Grill

There are only a few places on Navarre Beach you can get a drink brought to you with a front-row view of the Gulf. The Beach House Bar & Grill in the Springhill Suites is one of them. Again, we just had a drink there without our kids and it was a little kid heavy for us in the dining room. But we enjoyed the outdoor deck and even had a couple of appetizers that were enjoyable. The staff was friendly as well.

Springhill Suites Navarre Beach Lazy River

Yes, it is worth its own section because it is the main attraction, after the beach, of course. If you have kids and want to keep them happy and busy while you get yourself a drink, it is quite an asset of this hotel. There isn’t anything else like it in Navarre Beach and especially on the the beach.

History

Normally we wouldn’t give you the history of a hotel, especially since this one has very little of its own. It was built in 2017 and had its grand opening that summer. The 161-room hotel at 8375 Gulf Blvd. replaced the old Holiday Inn, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

FINAL THOUGHTS

One thing that makes Springhill Suite unique from other condominiums is its amenities. You can get everything you need without even going out of the resort. It has ATM machines, its own restaurants, its own laundry place, and even hosts its own water activities. Navarre Beach Springhill Suites is also conveniently located at a location that is walking distance to restaurants, piers, and so many other attractions.
