Please note that these coordinates are approximate and can be used as a general guide for locating the reef sections. It is always a good idea to consult local resources or join a guided snorkeling tour to ensure you are accurately navigating to the reef sites. If you want to go deep into the construction or the reef you can see the report here. The coordinates for the West reef seem to be on the West side of the causeway when you plug it into Google Maps and that doesn’t match what is on the pictured map above. We called SnorkelNavarreBeach.com and inquired and they are looking into the issue.

The Reef Structure

The Navarre Beach Snorkeling Reef consists of more than 130 artificial reef structures, made from eco-friendly materials such as limestone and concrete. These structures are carefully arranged in a grid pattern at depths ranging from 10 to 20 feet, making them accessible to snorkelers of all skill levels. The reef modules vary in size and shape, providing diverse habitats and hiding spots for marine creatures.

Marine Life at the Snorkeling Reef

The Navarre Beach Snorkeling Reef is teeming with life, creating a mesmerizing display of colors and shapes as you explore its depths. Here are just a few of the species you might encounter during your snorkeling adventure:

  1. Fish: Angelfish, Butterflyfish, Grouper, Snapper, Parrotfish, and Damselfish are among the many fish species that call the reef home. Keep an eye out for the dazzling Blue Tang, also known as the “Dory fish” from Finding Nemo.
  2. Invertebrates: The reef’s nooks and crannies are perfect hiding spots for invertebrates like crabs, shrimp, and lobsters. You might also spot sea stars, sea urchins, and a variety of sponges.
  3. Sea Turtles: The reef is a favorite hangout spot for sea turtles, such as Loggerhead, Green, and Hawksbill turtles. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and avoid touching these gentle creatures.
  4. Rays: Graceful Stingrays and Eagle Rays often glide through the waters around the reef. Keep an eye on the sandy bottom, as they sometimes bury themselves for camouflage.
  5. Seasonal Visitors: Depending on the time of year, you might even spot migratory species like Tarpon, Mackerel, and even the occasional Whale Shark or Manatee passing through.

Snorkeling Tips for the Navarre Beach Snorkeling Reef

  3. Use a waterproof camera or a GoPro to capture the stunning underwater scenery and marine life you encounter.
  4. Take your time exploring the reef, and remember to look closely at the reef structures, as many marine creatures are masters of camouflage.

The clear turquoise water that surrounds Key West is teeming with the rich abundance of the Gulf Stream, flowing from the Gulf of Mexico to the tip of Florida and into the Straits of Florida. Key West gets the best water of both worlds! You can enjoy a vast array of marine life here. The fishing is great in winter, December through February. In January, fishing is good around sunken wrecks for Cobia, and offshore for Mackerel and Blackfin Tunny. In April, fishing is really good for Tarpon, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna. Key West fishing does not disappoint!

Where to park in Key West?

Parking in Key West can be challenging; there are a variety of options, both private and public. In the historic district, known as “Old Town,”, many public streets have metered parking. There’s usually street parking in residential neighborhoods too, but these spaces are designated “Resident Parking Only” and people who live there can get mad if you park there.

Are there public beaches in Key West?

Yes, Key West has many beaches. Some of the most popular beaches are Smathers Beach, Higgs Beach, Rest Beach, Simonton Beach, and Dog Beach. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park also has a nice beach but it does cost money to be able to access it as a public beach.

Where to fly into the Florida Keys?

The Florida Keys are an island chain off the southern coast of Florida. There are many resorts and attractions in the Keys, but the only airport that has direct flights from major airlines is in Key West. The Marathon Airport is a small airport in the Keys and can serve private flights, but many visitors fly into airports on the mainland of Florida and then drive to the Keys.
